In this class we will draw the nature around us and observe the many textures of the natural world. We’ll look at techniques for developing a visual shorthand for a variety of textures, shading, and use color to enhance our drawings.
We’ll familiarize ourselves with the materials and techniques by developing one or two of our observations through more careful study.
For this class we will concentrate on pen and ink techniques, but students are welcome to bring different materials if they wish. I can assist you in most mediums.
Material List:
Paper:
sketchpad or paper
INK - At least one of the following will work for the pen and ink techniques in this class. A variety is great, if you have them…
Felt tip pens (black) - I recommend Pigma pens ( size 01, 03, and/or 05 ), but any will brand should work fine.

Brush Pens (black) - I also recommend the Pigma brand Brushpens (size FB, MB), they are relatively inexpensive and durable.
Ball point pens (black), very fine to larger line sizes, preferably waterproof ink.
(Cheap options like Bic pens are also fine)
Note: If you wish to use Quill pens and dipping ink or filled ink, or brush and ink, you are welcome to. But as these take a bit more time to get used to, some prior familiarity is recommended.
Pencil…
Graphite Pencils ( 2B, B, H or HB )
Eraser ( kneaded preferred )
Pencil sharpener
Color…
If you want to bring a material you prefer please do. Watercolors, gouache, etc.
Colored pencils will be provided to use on site during the class.
